A Great Advertisement for New Zealand

The videos below are actually a series of Air New Zealand advertisements called "Amazing Journeys" that we see on  TV every now and then.  Between the music and the general "story", I always end up teary by the end of the commerical.  The music is just gorgeous.

According to an Air New Zealand press release, "The original music was scored by Jim Hall of Auckland based Soundtrax and New Zealand singer Jayne Elleson, chosen for her haunting voice, provides the vocals. To capture the emotion of the stories Māori phrases that talk of reconnecting with loved ones and places make up the lyrics."

I love these ads too. The funny one is the second one - I think its been filmed from my building and always feels like I'm jumping out of my window at the start - scary!

Personally I felt like everyone in the commercials was depressed and committing suicide by jumping out of windows. That's an edgy ad campaign: "Fly with us -- it's like killing yourself." OK, maybe that's just me. In other Kiwi news making headlines around the globe, dogs are enjoying top 10 hits: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080218/wl_nm/newzealand_dogsong_dc

I like these ads but they do all have a bit of a sad theme. They've spoken to me particularly since I've been using AirNZ a lot the past year to see my sweety or her to come see me.

I seem to recall that some pressure group wanted the commercials pulled because they said the ads promoted suicide. That aside, Air New Zealand ads often have beautiful scenery. And, I get teary sometimes, too. But I think some other NZ commercials have covered the same emotional territory better.

I'm so confused as to how a commercial could promote suicide, but that is another topic for another day. Perhaps that line of thinking didn't hit me because I've always had flying dreams...

Besides, the ads may start out sad, but the end of each one finds the person with a loved one! Incredibly sweet...if only it were that easy.

Looks like I am with you on this one D - no idea either how it shows suicide! There is nothing more magical than flying, the feeling of being free, magical.

We love these ads too, they always make me stop and watch in awe. xx

Hey Dawn & Darren -

Thanks SO MUCH for posting these AirNZ ads -- they are *beautiful,* and I wouldn't have thought to look for them on YouTube :-) This is my first visit to your blog, and I have to say that these videos are succeeding at getting me to think more seriously about this dream of living in NZ that I've had off & on (mostly "off" ;-) for about the last 10 years....
Ah, it is hard to leave the place I love where I was born & raised -- but -- (or, shall I say "and"?) these videos are, um, :helping: .........

;-)
